Comparisons of schools of painters and photographers, essays by prominent photographic writers, examinations of early combination printing, stereographs, photomontage, and many other aspects of photographic history make this book a valuable contribution to a rapidly growing field.
The collection was assembled to honor Beaumont Newhall, preeminent photographic historian of our time. Illustrated with more than one hundred photographs, it will be useful and enjoyable to all readers interested in the growth of the art and science of photography."Note de contenu : List of Illustrations (vi)

Photography : Essays & Images / Beaumont Newhall
Titre : Photography : Essays & Images : Illustrated Readings in the History of Photography Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Beaumont Newhall, Editeur commercial Editeur : New York : The Museum of Modern Art Année de publication : 1980 Importance : 1 vol. (328 p.) Présentation : 190 ill. en noir et blanc Format : 20,9 x 28,7 cm Accompagnement : ISBN : 0-87070-387-0 Note générale : Beau-livre ; Histoire de la photographie. Beaumont Newhall calls this book « an autobiography of the art of photography, written by some of the men and women who by their inventive genius, their scientific skill, and their artistic sensibility have forged a technique into a vital visual medium. We have allowed them to speak to us directly, without condensing, excerpting, or otherwise editing their words, so that the volume may be both an authentic source book for students of the history of photography as an art and a narrative for the general reader. »
Mr. Newhall has chosen 190 photographs to illustrate the reports, critiscism, and points of view expressed by the writers of the « autobiography », many from the photographic archive of The Museum of Modern Art, others from collections throughout the world. He also provides brief introductory comments to place each selection in historical context. Photographs and text are carefully integrated.
The selections in this volume include first-person accounts of the inventions of the basic photographic techniques ; newspaper reports of the discovery of the daguerreotype and of the early photographic exhibitions ; criticism by Baudelaire, Léger, Moholy-Nagy ; personal statements by Stieglitz, Steichen, Strand, Lange, Adams, Weston, Evans, and others. This basic source material, presented at length and accompanied by relevant photographs, provides a rich background for the chronological history of the medium so masterfully presented by Mr. Newhall in his classic work, The History of Photography."Photography : Essays & Images : Illustrated Readings in the History of Photography [texte imprimé] / Beaumont Newhall, Editeur commercial . - New York : The Museum of Modern Art, 1980 . - 1 vol. The Camera Viewed (Writings on Twentieth-century photography) / Peninah R. Petruck
Langues : Anglais Mots-clés : E. P. Dutton Editions The Camera Viewed Littérature Théorie Photographie Histoire de la photographie Edward Steichen Henri Cartier-Bresson Ansel Adams Herm Lenz Minor White Frederick Sommer Jerry Uelsmann Duane Michals Martha Rosler Max Kozloff Dennis Longwell Les Levine André Bazin Rudolf Arnheim Siegfried Kracauer Roland Barthes John Szarkowski Susan Sontag Dorothea Lange Imogen Cunningham Lee Friendlander August Sander Diane Arbus Lucas Samaras Garry Winogrand Résumé : Couverture : "Divided into two volumes, this anthology is organized to follow a loose chronological reading of twentieth-century photography. The first volume focuses on photography before World War II, the second on more current developments. Each selection is introduced with a brief explanation of its significance and identification of its author. Both volumes contain photographs that highlight the author’s viewpoint.
Criteria for selection of essays and photographs are admittedly arbitrary. Foremost in consideration were quality of thought and expression, historical significance, and value as representative of different attitudes toward and developments of twentieth-century photography. Also favored were the interpretative and theorical rather than technical, biographical, and appreciative commentaries.
The writing on twentieth-century photography is as diverse as the medium itself. Photographers as well as writers known for their ideas on painting, sculpture, film, aesthetics, and culture at large contribute to that diversity. And in writing about photography, they pursue different, often conflicting, themes and approaches. The range covers specific and comparative studies on photographers and types of photography, essays on theory and technique, and personal statements."The Camera Viewed (Writings on Twentieth-century photography) : Volume 2 : Photography After World War II [texte imprimé] / Peninah R. Using more than two hundred illustrations of works by major photographers such as Hill and Adamson, O’Sullivan, Cameron, Atget, Emerson, Stieglitz, Weston, Adams, Lange, and Evans, the author presents a fascinating, comprehensive study of the significant trends and developments in the medium since the first photographs in 1839."
