It came to life out of pain and anger at the events that took place in Iraq after the fall of Mosul on 10th June 2014.
It started as a conversation in Beirut, and then became a mission with simple art materials – paper, colouring pens and pencils – that Tamara Chalabi and Philippe Van Cauteren took to the camp in Iraqi Kurdistan. Some months later, they travelled to Beijing, with 546 drawings, from which Ai Weiwei would make his selection and mark his collaboration on this project.
The participants, whose drawings are in this book, are adults from all walks of life : farmers, lawyers, students, mothers, teachers … simply people. In a situation of increasing violence, where ISIS is intent on inventing a new world, where both people and culture are being destroyed and the collective human memory is being cleansed, the significance of this book, as a tesmatent of survival, becomes more imperative.
This book is dedicated to all refugees and internally displaced people in Ira and throughout the world."
