This new body of work extends the artistic trajectory charted across Roger Ballen’s three previous books – Outland, Shadow Chamber and Boarding House. The black-and-white images featured in Asylum of the Birds were photographed within the confines of a house in a Johannesbrug suburb, the location of which remains a hidden mystery. The inhabitants of the house, both people and animals, and most notably, the ever-present birds, are the cast who perform within a sculptural and decorated theatrical interior that Roger Ballen creates and orchestrates. The resulting images exist in a space between painting, drawing, installation and photography. They are timeless, psychologically powerful and masterfully composed. In a world in which photographers seek to avoid definition, Roger Ballen’s photographs defy classification and genres : his world stands out as one of a kind."Asylum of the Birds [texte imprimé] / Roger Ballen, Artiste ; Didi Bozzini (19..-....), Préfacier, etc. . - Londres : Thames & Hudson, 2014 . - 1 vol. Boarding House / Roger Ballen
PhotographieMots-clés : Roger Ballen photographe photographie contemporaine photographie documentaire surréalisme fiction condition humaine marginalité Résumé : Couverture : "For five years, the focus of Roger Ballen’s photographic work has been a strange and alluring place near Johannesburg he calls the Boarding House. It is crowded with poor workers, transients, criminals hiding from the law, witchdoctors, children, pet animals and insects. There are stains and marks, curious objects and mysterious drawings, smells and noises everywhere.
These photographs are like images from a waking dream, compelling and thought-provoking, formally sophisticated and filled with layers of rich detail. An element of fiction is essential to the way Ballen represents what he finds, and the rooms and corners of the Boarding House he shows us are characterized by an altered sense of place. With their emphasis on drawn and sculptural elements, and the collaboration between the artist and his subjects clearly evident, the images in Boarding House blur the lines between documentary photography and art forms such as painting, theatre and sculpture – they make us question everything we see.
In his introduction to Boarding House, photography curator David Travis addresses this new body of work in the wider context of Ballen’s career to date."Boarding House [texte imprimé] / Roger Ballen, Auteur ; David Travis (1948-....), Préfacier, etc. . - London : Phaidon, 2009 . - 1 vol. Shadow Chamber / Roger Ballen
PhotographieMots-clés : Roger Ballen photographe photographie contemporaine photographie documentaire surréalisme fiction condition humaine marginalité Résumé : Couverture : "Best known for his striking photographs of people on the fringes of South African society, Roger Ballen makes images that are ambiguous and often disturbing, but also shot through with flashes of dark humour. The photographs in Shadow Chamber blur the boundaries between documentary photography and art forms such as painting, theatre and sculpture, challenging the ways in which we perceive the ‘reality’ of photography. Ballen’s images are completely honest, yet also fabricated.
The mysterious, cell-like rooms that Ballen photographs are actual places, but they are unsettling and strange, logical but impossible : their walls are covered with scribbled drawings, stains and dangling wires, the floors are strewn with bizarre props and artefacts. Dogs, rabbits and kittens wander into the frame or are stuffed into unlikely containers. The humans and animals in Ballen’s photographs appear isolated and lost, yet strangely empowered at the same time. The resulting images are allegories of lived experiences and surreal takes of human destiny.
In his introduction to Shadow Chamber, curator Robert A. Sobieszek analyzes Ballen’s unique approach and sets his work in the wider context of the history of documentary photography and critical theory."Shadow Chamber [texte imprimé] / Roger Ballen, Auteur ; Robert A.
